Matt Baume started off as a blogger in 2004, and kept at it in his spare time until his spare time eventually grew to occupy the entire day. He's now a freelance writer covering LGBT news, science, and media for publications like The Bay Area Reporter, SFist, Queerty, NBC, and The SF Appeal. Working as a both blogger and print reporter, he's dedicated to merging the best-practices of old and new media. He also runs marriage-equality tracker Stop8.org, conducts interviews with fellow writers at WritersGettingPaid.mattbaume.com, and raises rats.

Bio for Porchlight:

Matt Baume is a writer and instigator perched delicately atop San Francisco.

A former editor of SFist and current reporter for sites that include the SF Appeal, SF Weekly, Queerty, Streetsblog, and the Bay Area Reporter, he reported extensively on Muni for many years before deciding that covering the local sewer system would be more uplifting.

His main areas of expertise are gay things and urban ecology, which he endeavors to combine whenever possible. Recent writings touch upon such topics as the sociology of sewers, frog repopulation, Showgirls, sloughs, rat fancy, the history of rhododendrons and leather bondage, overlooked comic books, Charo, and a dirty cheese factory. (Not all at once.)

He is currently working on a book about Prop 8 and what it means to be a family under siege by one's own country.

Matt also produces various independent video projects, most notably a regular weekly series on marriage equality. In his spare time he photographs nightlife, bikes everywhere, and raises rats.
