Hi Honey, I'm Homo! — Buchpräsentation mit Matt Baume, Vienna

As a preview to Vienna Pride, Matt Baume will present his award-winning book "Hi Honey, I'm Homo!" on May 7, 2026.

In it, he explores the history of queer characters in TV sitcoms—from the 1960s to the present day, from "The Golden Girls" and "Friends" to "Modern Family" and many more.

Baume will show video clips of iconic moments in queer sitcom history and share fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about how subversive queer humor found its way onto television. He will also explain how mass media shaped, and continue to shape, the LGBTQ+ liberation movement.

Über das Buch
Behind the scenes of the most popular sitcoms of the 20th century, a revolution was brewing. For decades, amidst the bright lights, studio-audience laughs, and absurdly large apartment sets, the real-life story of American LGBTQ+ liberation unfolded in plain sight in front of millions of viewers, most of whom were laughing too hard to mind. From flamboyant relatives on »Bewitched« to closely-guarded secrets on »All in the Family,« from network-censor fights over »Soap« to behind-the-scenes activism on the set of »The Golden Girls, from »Ellen«'s culture clash and »Will & Grace«'s mixed reception to »Modern Family«'s primetime power-couple, »Hi Honey, I'm Homo!« is the story not only of how subversive queer comedy transformed the American sitcom, from its inception through today, but how our favorite sitcoms transformed, and continue to transform, America.

What's so Gay About Frasier?

frasier and niles staring at each other against a Seattle skyline, with the words "what's so gay about frasier?"

Frasier’s supposed to be Seattle’s most eligible heterosexual bachelor … so why does he keep winding up in one gay farce after another?

In honor of Pride, let’s take a guided tour of Frasier’s gayest fiascos, flim-flams, and folderol: From the time he accidentally invited his boss Tom on a date … to his brief power-coupling with Captain Picard … to the notoriously lusty ski lodge. Join us for a long lingering look at what made this sitcom so gay, and a celebration of the many queer folks who made it all possible behind the scenes. It’s a one-hour talk loaded with video clips plus a 15-minute Q&A, followed by a casual hangout and chat afterwards.

Bring your copy of Hi Honey, I’m Homo! to get it signed, or pick up a copy in-store — and while you’re here, grab some free stickers, bookmarks, and a list of recommended episodes so you can enjoy your own queer-sitcom marathon at home.

Sitcoms and the Queering of Popular Culture

Pop culture critic Matt Baume visits the Appel Salon to discuss his new book Hi Honey, I'm Homo! Armed with humour, wit and reams of research, Matt will share behind the scenes stories and examine the cultural impact of the most groundbreaking coming out scenes in TV history.

For decades, amidst the bright lights, studio-audience laughs, and absurdly large apartment sets, the real-life story of American LGBTQ+ liberation unfolded in plain sight in front of millions of viewers, most of whom were laughing too hard to mind. Whether with awkward confessions, sympathetic support or jubilant celebrations, sitcoms have tackled LGBTQ+ coming out stories from every conceivable angle. As a result, they have plenty to teach us about the best (and worst) ways to foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable being themselves.

Author Matt Baume speaks with writer, film programmer, pop culture critic Anthony Oliveira about how comedy and humor have made coming out easier, how queer TV characters have evolved over the years and why coming out is such a vital part of Pride.
